Draw from the Holster

Build a repeatable draw and a clean first shot on demand.

Difficulty
Beginner to advanced
Suggested par
1.50 s
Volume
5 sets of 5 repetitions, with a short pause between sets.

What this drill trains

Produce the same grip, the same sight picture and the same trigger press every single time the beep goes off — then make that repeatable sequence faster.

Equipment

Start position

Standing, hands relaxed at your sides, firearm holstered and secured. If your division requires it, the cover garment is closed.

How to run it

  1. Confirm the firearm is unloaded and there is no ammunition in the room. Check the chamber, then check it again.
  2. Set your par time on the timer and holster the unloaded firearm.
  3. Stand relaxed with your hands at your sides and your eyes on the aiming point — not on the gun.
  4. On the beep, get a full firing grip while the gun is still in the holster. A grip you fix later costs more time than the grip you take now.
  5. Draw straight up until the muzzle clears the holster, then rotate toward the target as the hands meet.
  6. Press out to full extension. The sights should arrive already aligned, not be hunted for once the arms are straight.
  7. Break the trigger the moment the sight picture is acceptable, before the par beep.
  8. Reset: check the chamber again, holster, and repeat.

Par times to aim for

Set the par on a timer and work against it. These are practice targets, not official standards — use them as a starting point and let your own honest repetitions guide you.

How to score it

A repetition counts only when the shot breaks before the par beep AND the sights are still on the aiming point at the break. A fast draw onto a bad sight picture is a failed repetition, not a fast one.

How to progress

Start with a par you can hit roughly 8 times out of 10. When you clear it 10 times in a row with an honest sight picture, take 0.1 s off and stay there until it is clean again.
